As we all know, Jack and his hunters have lost all sense of humanity. I believe this happened because they are all little boys, and their knowledge of history is very basic. The point of learning history is so we can't repeat our mistakes. As we see, Jack turns into this communistic, controlling person who only cares about hunting and power. I see a great parallel with Jack and Adolph Hitler. Jack believes that only important people should have a voice, and he tries to silence the littluns. This is similar to Hitler and the Jews. Hitler believed that the Jews weren't important, so he completely silenced them. I believe that history and knowledge is very important. If the boys knew the importance of this, they wouldn't face such savegry. Age also plays a big role in why the boys revolt. In conclusion, if the boys were older and smarter they would be okay. I think Golding may be trying to point out the importance of knowledge. Without knowledge, we're basically savages, and thats what happened with most of the boys.

I fully agree with Miranda expect for one part. I don't think if the boys were older they would be ok. It would be hard for anyone to survive on an island even if they were grown up. For the most part in this book, the boys seem pretty grown up to me.
ReplyDeleteIf grown men were on the island they would still have the same struggles as the kids do. Someone will soon revolt and start "revolutions" so to speak. It's hard to have control when people are desperate for power and trying to survive. The hardest part is very few people have the same exact way of thinking which causes arguments. Men, just as the boys did, would have arguments with each other and eventually break apart. This might turn out in a different way since the men would have their wits but that can be forgotten when away from civilization. Even though the older men would know about history, it would be so hard to focus on that awfully hot island for anyone. The strive for power would be greater among adult men. Let’s face it, most men love having control because it makes them feel manlier about themselves.
I've learned the longer one is away from civilization, it is easier to do things that are looked down upon because the civilization that was once there is so easily forgotten. It would be so hard to take control and keep control of a situation like this without using fear and individual power as a motivator. It's just the way things are. Most people want their own way, not to be told what to do or how to do it. Overall, one can not make everyone happy. With each decision comes an argument against it whether someone is 12 or 52.
